Bios of Judges, Seminar and Clinic Leaders
The 2008 National Specialty Committee is proud to present:
Our esteemed judges, seminar and clinic leaders...
Judge Daniela Pavlovska (CMKU): Regular Conformation Club-Show--Dogs
In May of 2008 the Czech Leonberger Club will celebrate its twentieth anniversary. Mrs. Pavlovska is one of its three founders. Currently the Chairperson of the Czech Leonberger Club's Breeding Committee, she is a licensed international judge of Saint Bernards and English Mastiffs. However, she is a specialist in the Leonberger breed, judging most recently in Finland and Leonberg. As a child she says that she dreamt of having dogs and horses. As an adult this dream has come true. She shares her home in a forested region south of Prague with horses, Leonbergers, and her husband Milan Pavlovsky (Who is the Vice President of the Czech Leonberger Club). Her first Leonberger came from East Germany in 1984. Kennel Salve Leon is now comprised of three Leonbergers: Everyday Norton Salve Leon (7.5-years-old), Leoniitan Estrella Nordica (5.5-years-old), and the baby, Skjaergaardens Winorra for Salveleon (20-months-old). Mrs. Pavlovska's attitude is perfectly summarized by the following quote: "Leos are the biggest hobby in my life, and the biggest love for our whole family."
Judge Per Kristian Andersen (NKK): Regular Conformation Club-Show--Bitches
Mr. Andersen has had dogs in his life for about 40 years. Originally a German Shepherd fancier, he later got into Norwich Terriers and Leonbergers (A breeder of both). As to Leonbergers, he was a founder and the first president of the Norwegian Leonberger Club back in 1991, and remains an honorary member. A licensed judge since 1993, he has judged Corgis, Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, Estrellas, Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, Schnauzers, Bernese Mountain Dogs and, of course, Leonbergers. In addition to judging, he has previously served in dog-related organizations such as the Norwegian Rescue Dog Association, Norwegian Organization for Authorized judges, International Canine Fora, and has been the Vice Chairman of the Norwegian Kennel Club since 1999. Not content with the placid side of the dog fancy, Mr. Andersen has done Nordic style toboggan racing and, as an owner of a licensed rescue dog, has done avalanche rescue dog training. Mr. Anderson lives in the town of Horten, about an hour southwest of Oslo, with his wife, Ellen, a cat, and a seven-year-old Norwich Terrier named Woody.
Judge Jean Pero (AKC): LCA AKC-Format Conformation--Dogs & Bitches
I am somewhat a newcomer to the sport of purebred dogs, compared to a lot of my fellow Judges. As a child I was not allowed to have a dog, could be the reason that at one time I owned and lived with 23 Great Pyrenees. I got my first show dog, a Great Pyrenees in 1982 and the rest is history. Although, I have bred a small number of litters (9) they have included 19 Champions, WD, RWD, WB, BBE, BOW, and Best in Futurity at our National Specialties.

I am a past President of the Great Pyrenees Club of America, chair the Judge Selection and Judges Education Committee and serve on the Health and Rescue Committees. I have been chosen to chair three National Specialties, including the 2010 that will be held in conjunction with the 4th Great Pyrenees World Conference. I was recently elected to judge the 2009 Great Pyrenees Club of America’s National Specialty. An honor that is humbling and without a doubt the greatest honor that my breed club could bestow.

I am a founding and board member of the Pyrenean Shepherd Club of America, Board member of Evergreen Colorado Kennel Club, and Treasurer of Mile High Great Pyrenees Club. Throughout the last 20+ years I served as show chair and officer positions in several all Breed and Regional Breed Clubs.

I applied for my Judges license in 2003 and am currently approved to judge Pyrs, Malamutes, Dobermans, Bernese Mountain Dogs and Juniors.

I am married, have three grown Children and three Grandchildren. My non-dog hobbies include travel, exploring wineries, cooking, and reading. I currently live with one Pyr, one Pyrenean Shepherd, and 2 cats, a Ragdoll and a Berman.

I wish to thank the Leonberger Club for the privilege of being a part of your 2008 National Specialty.

Judge Patricia L. Maynard (AKC): Obedience & Rally-O Trial
I have been judging obedience (and now rally) since 1987. And for those of you who think your breed is difficult to train...my original Utility Degree was on a male Akita!

I live in Longmont, Colorado with my significant (Jeff), 2 Australian Terriers and 1 Golden Retriever. I compete in conformation, obedience, rally and agility. I also enjoy yoga, skiing and American Kenpo Karate. And I have a great job as a massage therapist!

With my canine partners and one human partner, I have a non-profit, Paws 4 Responsibility (www.paws4responsibility.org). Our two main programs are presenting Responsible Pet Ownership to elementary school children (very creatively...my Golden even plays basketball); and our Pawsitive Reading program. We have begun to take registered therapy dogs to elementary schools for selected students to gain extra one-on-one time reading to the best listeners, “their” canine therapist. And we are at the Longmont library one Monday evening/month for one-on-one drop-in reading.

Judge Carin Shadwick (LCA): Non-Regular Conformation Club-Show
Carin Shadwick has been a member of the LCA since 1993, and along with her family, has enjoyed Leonbergers since 1991. Carin has been active in the LCA starting with the Breeding Committee, becoming its Chairperson in 2001. She is the BACL Coordinator and co-edits the Stud Catalog with her husband, Jan. Carin judged the Puppy Sweeps and Non-regular classes at the 2000 National Specialty in Seaside, Oregon, as well as the Puppy Sweeps at the 2002 National Specialty in Williamsburg, VA. The Board formally instated Carin as an LCA Judge in November 2002. Most recently, Carin was invited to judge the Southeast Spring Regional Specialty in Gainesville, FL. Carin and Jan established North Star Kennel in 1994 and have raised three litters.
Judge Agi Hejja (LCA): Puppy Sweeps
Mrs. Hejja was raised in Budapest, Hungary, and has had dogs all of her life. Sometime after getting her first Kuvasz in 1970 she was bitten by the "show bug." From there it was only logical to begin breeding winning Kuvasz herself. With heart felt devotion to the breed, she raised, trained, and campaigned many Kuvaszok to their championships; while all that time she was also mentoring newcomers interested in the breed. In 1990 she was introduced to the Leonberger by one of her Kuvasz puppy buyers: Alida Greendyk. Having mentored Alida with her Kuvaszok, the mentoring naturally continued after Ms. Greendyk got her first Leo. It was not long before Agi had a Leo of her own too! Since both breeds are working dogs, her 20 years of knowledge and experience was easily transferred to the Leonberger. An LCA judge since 2004, Mrs. Hejja has judged at two prior LCA National Specialties and several Regional Specialties. She shares her home in Gum Spring, Virginia, with her husband Sean, 5 Leonbergers, and 3 Kuvaszok.
